Communicating Difficult Decisions
On 3rd June, 2009 | Wednesday

Earlier this year I wrote about the fact that employees were craving information about how the financial crisis was impacting their jobs and their companies.  As the economy has worsened, this need has increased.  More and more companies have implemented layoffs and other changes and not all are doing a good job of communicating.

Recently, the Opinion Research Corporation (ORC) found that about half of the employees surveyed said their companies have communicated well.  Which means 50% of employees think their companies could do better.

The survey also found that employees are two times as likely to go the extra mile for their company and almost four times as likely to recommend it to others if they are satisfied with the ways in which it communicates difficult decisions.  According to the ORC, employees are looking for:

  • Thorough explanations of the actions taken and the reasons behind the action
  • Being kept informed of ongoing decisions and reasons for those decisions as the economy continues to toss and turn
  • Early indications of impending difficult decisions so employees are not caught off-guard
  • Open and honest communication
  • Regular updates through frequent communication
